The Truth Must Come Out

I sit in the courtroom.
Witnessing your struggle.
Before you, listening to what you say,
Sits your tormentor.
He’s watching you,
Waiting for you to fall apart.

The truth must come out.
We must protect our children.

You take a long, deep breath.
I can see your body trembling.
Your neck is vulnerable;
Its pulse, testimony to your distress.
You are trying to stay calm,
To tell what you have seen,
What you have endured.
You are doing this for the younger ones.

The truth must come out.
We must protect our children.

Your trembling subsides.
You sit higher in the witness chair.
Your voice sails forth,
Clear and steady.
You tell them what he did,
Your head high, without shame.

The truth must come out.
We must protect our children.
